Logan never wanted to stop kissing Alex.

Alex was the kind of guy who kissed like he knew what he was doing, like he was taking you apart and knew it. Logan wanted to get Alex into a bed and see all the things that Alex could do to him.

But then he heard whimpering and when they stopped to look, they found a dog further down the path.

What would a dog be doing out here?

Alex pulled away from Logan, walking carefully towards the dog. “Hey, buddy, you okay?”

Logan followed, and as he got closer, he could see that it was a retriever lying on its side. Alex stopped short as he got closer, and Logan realized what Alex had seen: the dog’s stomach was huge, and there was a bit of blood on the ground.

“Holy shit,” he blurted out. She was giving birth.

“Poor thing.” Alex crouched down and held out his hand for the dog to sniff. “Maybe she was abandoned by her owners or something. Or she got lost, happens a lot out here.”

The dog sniffed Alex’s hand and then lay back, whimpering again. “What should we do?” Logan asked. He’d never owned a dog, never mind one that was pregnant and about to give birth.

“Ideally we’d have blankets or something.” Alex grimaced. “This is not what I planned when I invited you on this hike with me.”

He pet up and down the dog’s sides. “Don’t worry girl,” he cooed, his voice low and soothing. “We’ll take care of you.”

Logan took off his shirt. “Here. It’s not a blanket but it’ll help with the pups.”

“You’ll get sunburned.”

Logan shrugged. “Better than then a puppy dies of infection, right?”

Alex took the shirt from him, looking up and down Logan’s chest. Logan felt himself flushing. Alex winked at him, then turned back to the dog. “Here comes the first one.”

Something Logan hadn’t known about dogs was that there could be anywhere from twenty minutes to an hour in between one puppy and the next. He and Alex crouched down, soothing the dog and rubbing the puppies dry when they came out, making sure they were breathing.

Logan wished that he could do something to take the pain away from the mother dog. She was doing this like a champ with instinct clearly taking over, but she still whimpered or growled softly in pain every so often as she pushed out another pup. The process seemed to take forever, and Logan’s heart sometimes felt like it stopped out of pure fear that one of the puppies wouldn’t make it.

They were so delicate, their eyes still closed, their mouths barely able to open. They made little whuffling noises that tugged at Logan’s heart and gave tiny squeaks of happiness when they were settled against their mother.

“They’re so tiny,” Logan whispered, holding one up for Alex to look at. Alex made a cooing noise and pet the puppy on the nose before Logan popped the puppy back down for the mom to lick at.

He could definitely feel
